Zachry Construction was the
sponsor for the heavy/civil project, which was construction of an underpass for
US 75 at Churchill Way in Dallas County, TX.
The heavy/civil competition differs from the other two ASC/AGC student
competitions in that all work solving the problem is done at one location for
all teams. This meant that the H/C team
traveled to Dallas on Saturday afternoon and started their 16-hour problem
solving session at 6:00 am the next morning, with a bid letting held at 10:30
pm that evening. The competition is
based upon the team's ability to determine means and methods, interpretation
and understanding of unit price specifications, determine equipment spread,
develop crew sizes and production rates, develop durations, develop unit costs,
distribute general requirement costs, and produce a final unit price for
several line items in the unit price bid, along with a total bid price for all
items after extensions.
Other
required items included preparation of the schedule, preparation of the bid
envelope and bid form, answers to questions concerning specifications, and
take-off and pricing procedures. On
Monday, the team made their presentation to the judges, as if the judges were
higher management, as an internal bid review.
Teams from Louisiana Tech
University, Texas Tech University, University of Louisiana at Monroe, Texas
A&M, and the University of Oklahoma participated in the competition. Jess Coonrod was named Best Presenter for
the Heavy/Civil Competition. OSU was
the first place winner edging Texas A&M, and third place went to Louisiana
Tech. By winning first place, OSU
will represent Region V of the Associated Schools of Construction at the
National Student Competition held in Las Vegas (in conjunction with the AGC
National Convention) March 13 – 16, 2005.

This year's problem for the CM Team
consisted of preparing a competitive CM At Risk Proposal to construct a new
Health Science Center for University of North Texas in Fort Worth, TX. The six-member student team was given
16-hours to solve the problem which included assembling a project management
team, preparing a budget and a proposed schedule, and formulating various value
engineering proposals.
The team began at 8:00 am on
Saturday, and the $22 million proposal was written, assembled and transmitted
electronically to the owner before midnight.
The following day, the team printed the submittal copies of the
proposal, created and refined its oral presentation and traveled to Dallas; the
presentations were held on Monday at the offices of QUOIN Chapter, AGC. Awards were presented at the competition
banquet, held at the Gaylord Hotel, and the CM team placed 2nd to
Texas A&M University and ahead of the University of Oklahoma. Other teams represented John Brown
University, Texas Tech University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe and Oklahoma
State University – Okmulgee. Steve
Rupert was honored as 2nd Best Presenter in the CM Competition,
which was sponsored by Austin Commercial of Dallas.

Bob Moore Construction Company of
Dallas sponsored the Student Design / Build Competition this year. As in previous years, the problem was sent
to each participating school and the problem was solved at the school during a
16-hour period on Saturday including preliminary design, estimating, scheduling,
project organization, and proposal preparation. On Sunday the team traveled to Dallas, and all schools made their
presentations on Monday. The project
this year was a one-story office in Arlington, Texas. The team faced the
challenge of designing and building a new structure to house a board of
realtors along with some shell space for future tenants. Safety issues were of
prime importance, as the site was adjacent to a church and a highway. Team
members were Drew Parli and David Brown from OSU School of Architecture who
shouldered the design responsibility.
CMT's Ryan Stafford, Zac McGrath, Angela Suarez, and Dexter Opela
provided the estimating, scheduling, project management, and project
organization for the problem. The team
was coached by Mark Pruitt, his 10th year as a competition team
coach. Texas A&M University, Texas
Tech University, and University of Oklahoma provided competition. OSU
placed 2nd behind TAMU once again coming in ahead of OU. Drew Parli placed 3rd in the
individual presenter competition.
