Epsilon IV Chapter of
Sigma Lambda Chi
Established at OSU in
1999
Sigma Lambda Chi is an
international construction honor society that recognizes students pursuing
degrees in the field of construction. Over 53 major US universities have
charters of Sigma Lambda Chi. The OSU Construction Management Technology
department was approved for a charter November 4th, 1999, and
charter members were inducted February 24th, 2000. The induction
ceremony was conducted jointly with the University of Oklahoma's Epsilon III
Chapter of SLC in Norman.
Ryan Bader, 1999
Construction Management Society (CMS) President, and new President of SLC,
began the initial chartering process with the guidance of the new SLC chapter
advisor, Dr. Dana Hobson. Bill McCollough, 1999 Vice-President of CMS, also
assisted in gaining approval for OSU's charter from the National SLC Executive
Committee. "It is important to recognize when a student excels in his or her
field of study," said Dr. Hobson. "Employers and graduate schools recognize
membership in Sigma Lambda Chi as a prestigious achievement within the
construction management industry," he said.
Epsilon IV Chapter of SLC was started at OSU to give the CMT
students a chance to be recognized for their academic scholarship and
leadership, just as students in the engineering disciplines are honored by
membership in their national honor societies. This chapter will rank OSU's
construction department with other universities in the Big XII and
nationwide. Currently only four universities in the Big XII (Texas A&M,
Kansas State, Iowa State, Nebraska) have SLC chapters. "This honor society is
very prestigious and recognized throughout the construction industry and the
academic community," Bader said.
To be eligible for membership in SLC, students must have completed
the equivalent of two academic years of study toward their degrees and have an
overall scholastic average in the upper 20% of their incoming class.
Additionally, they must have done resident study at OSU for the preceding six
months, participated in extra-curricular activities, and displayed leadership,
character, and personality traits that promise good reflection on the SLC
chapter.
SLC chapter objectives include rendering service to the field of
construction, developing good relations between academia, industry, and the
public and recognizing outstanding professionals in construction and allied
fields.
SLC
is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), the
coordinating agency for collegiate honor societies.
